Sepideh Rahaa: One Ocean Is a Distance, 2013–2015, a still from video.
I was born in a decade marked by enormous changes for Iran – the revolution of 1979, the Iran-Iraq war and other transformations coming one after another. All those changes that Iranian society underwent during those times had a profound impact on me. I try to convey something that either I or people who I know have experienced.
Striving to show the reality of life and its different angles.
Being an artist gives me the ability and strength to think and reflect upon life and the things that matter in it. It makes me committed to being responsible about what I do in my life and about other people.
My works are mainly related to geopolitics and the concept of time and space. Changes of individual people's lives caused by national and international forces. The power differential between people and society is another important theme in my art. I am particularly interested in people's lives and the pressure they experience due to social and political circumstances and changes.
